Introduction
While the IWC Ingenieur can trace its origins as far back as 1955, the collection was revamped in a rather significant manner in the 1970s following the popularisation of stainless steel luxury sports watches. Designed by Gerald Genta himself, the new Ingenieur SL featured a slim 40mm ‘Jumbo-sized’ case that was attached to an integrated bracelet, much like Genta’s Royal Oak design. Furthermore, it even featured a bezel with five rivets, much like the Royal Oak’s exposed screws. Designed in 1974 and launched in 1976, the Ingenieur SL was discontinued in 1983 after a 7 year production run, beginning what would become a story of revamps and redesigns until 2023 when IWC relaunched the Ingenieur to perhaps the most rapturous applause from the industry that they might have anticipated. Returning to its Genta roots, the Ingenieur boasted largely the same design as it had in the 1970s but with a handful of modern changes such as its slimmer case profile, cross-hatched dial pattern, case bevels, and a handful of other updates. Offered here we have the Ingenieur Automatic 42 ref. IW338903 in black ceramic, launched in 2025. Made entirely of black ceramic, as its name suggests, and boasting a black dial and powered by the automatic in-house cal. 82110 movement, this lightweight watch is one heavy-hitting addition to one of the industry’s hottest collections.

THE DIAL
Featuring a black dial with a crosshatch textured pattern made up of blocks with alternating engraving directions, the Ingenieur's dial has a wonderful depth to it.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Incredibly light on the wrist thanks to its black ceramic case and bracelet, the ref. IW338903 is tremendously easy to wear, even with its enlarged 42mm case diameter, which increased upon the collection's 40mm case size.

Our Perspective
With a much-anticipated return in 2023, IWC's Ingenieur collection has gone from strength to strength and in 2025, it went above and beyond anyone's expectations with the black ceramic model that we have here.
