IWC Pilot's Watch IW387905 Tribute to 3705 Ceratanium

Introduction

Launched in 1994 and produced until 1998, the IWC Ceramic Flieger ref. 3705 was produced in less than 2000 examples and has since grown to become one of IWC’s most sought-after vintage offerings. Although IWC had explored the use of ceramic cases earlier in the 1980's, the 3705 is perhaps the most famous and successful application of this difficult to use case material, and so it has gained a considerable cult following over the decades. So large was this following, that in 2021 IWC released a tribute to the 3705, which is the watch that we have here. Made of ceratanium, a proprietary titanium allow that combines the properties of ceramic and titanium, the IW387905’s dial is entirely faithful to the 3705 with its black chronograph display and dual date and day apertures at 3 o’clock. Powered by the automatic cal. 69380 instead of the Valjoux cal. 7750, the IW387905 does differ from the 3705 in some respects. Additionally, with a larger 41mm construction, the watch is now more in line with IWC’s other modern offerings, allowing the brand’s modern collectors to enjoy the 3705’s aesthetic without sacrificing the contemporary details that have made them enjoy IWC for what they are today.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Fitted with IWC's iconic black Fliegerchronograph dial, the Tribute to 3705 boasts the same chronograph subdial layout and twin day and date apertures at 3 o'clock that was in the 3705. Additionally, it also features the all-important squared-off hour hand.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Made of ceratanium, IWC's proprietary titanium alloy that combines the properties of ceramic and titanium, the Tribute to 3705's blacked-out construction is both hard-wearing and light on the wrist while also being shatter-resistant.

Condition

Watch is in very good overall condition. Ceratanium case shows minor signs of use, but no dings or scratches. The crystal has a few minor scratches that are visible near the upper subdial as seen in the images. Caseback engravings have some visible surface debris trapped in the engravings. Strap shows moderate wear and some discoloration along the canvas.

Our Perspective

An intelligently done reissue of a neo-vintage icon, the Tribute to 3705 pays faithful homage to the 3705 while still embracing IWC's modern design details, such as their larger cases, and technical prowess with its modern movement and new titanium alloy.
