Introduction

Designed by René-Alfred Chauvot, the Reverso was conceived with the express purpose of being able to withstand the harsh beating a watch would endure during a game of polo by virtue of its eponymous reversible function. This was put to JLC by entrepreneur César de Trey as a challenge for the brand in 1930. Born the year following in 1931, the Reverso was a sports watch, due to its particular use case. Thanks to its now-classical aesthetic and graceful design, the Reverso has evolved into a modern dress watch. However, in the 1930s, the Reverso needed to be more durable than other available watches; hence its ingenious reversible case was born. This protected the dial from a direct hit and gave the Reverso its name. Over 90 years later and the Reverso’s design lives on as one of the most recognizable in watchmaking. Offered here we have the Reverso Grande GMT ref. Q3028420. Made of stainless steel, it features a 29mm wide and 40mm case which gives meaning to its “Grande” designation. In keeping with the Reverso’s original versions, the ref. Q3028420 is powered by a manual-wind movement, the cal. 878, and features a monochromatic silver dial with intricate guilloche throughout and a date function at 7 o’clock that is joined by a small seconds subdial at 5 o’clock and an AM/PM indicator at 2 o’clock. Additionally, it also features a black dial on the reverse side of its case that houses an 8-day power reserve, a 24-hour sub-dial, and its own day and night indicator. Offering fantastic wearability on account of its twin-dial design, this Reverso will certainly be an easily fit for any collection.

Condition

The watch is in overall excellent condition. The case has some light scratches and signs of wear, with a slightly more noticeable nick on the lower right lug. The case back has light signs of wear, but the engravings are all well defined. The white dial is in excellent condition, with some slight discoloration around 8 and a little at 6. The blued hands are very clean. The black dial is also excellent. The watch is fitted with a black alligator JLC strap with a steel deployant buckle in excellent condition. Comes in a JLC pouch and leather roll.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

The Reverso has been at the forefront of the horology industry since its debut in 1931, and as such watch collectors have been eager to add it to their collection in some form or another for almost an entire century. With its duoface design and impressive functionality, this ref. Q3028420 is as capable as the Reverso gets.
