Introduction

Designed by René-Alfred Chauvot, the Reverso was conceived with the express purpose of being able to withstand the harsh beating a watch would endure during a game of polo by virtue of its eponymous reversible function. This was put to JLC by entrepreneur César de Trey as a challenge for the brand in 1930. Born the year following in 1931, the Reverso was a sports watch, due to its particular use case. Thanks to its now-classical aesthetic and graceful design, the Reverso has evolved into a modern dress watch. However, in the 1930s, the Reverso needed to be more durable than other available watches; hence its ingenious reversible case was born. This protected the dial from a direct hit and gave the Reverso its name. Over 90 years later and the Reverso’s design lives on as one of the most recognizable in watchmaking. Offered here we have the Reverso Gran Sport Chronograph ref. 295.8.59. Made of stainless steel, it features a 29mm wide and 37mm long case. In keeping with the Reverso’s original versions, the ref. 295.8.59 is powered by a manual-wind movement, the cal. 859, and features a monochromatic silver dial with intricate guilloche and a date function at 6 o’clock. Additionally, it also features a black and white dial on the reverse side of its case that houses its 60-second chronograph dial and 30-minute retrograde hand. Offering fantastic wearability on account of its twin-dial design and stainless steel bracelet, this Reverso will certainly be an easily fit for any collection.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows surface scratches and light nicks to the front of the time-telling side. The case back retains well-defined engravings. Both dials are near mint, with very clean hands throughout. It is fitted with a steel bracelet and deployant clasp showing light surface scuffs. The bracelet is fitted with 11 links and fits approximately a 6¾” wrist. Additionally, there are 2 links included. Comes complete with inner and outer boxes, guarantee, booklets, and a spare Reverso rubber strap with Jaeger-LeCoultre deployant clasp.

Our Perspective

A sporty and wonderfully functional Reverso, the ref. 295.8.59 merges the gap between the model's elegance and some collectors' requirements for a watch that is functional and able to be worn daily.
