Founded by young watchmaker Stefan Ketelaars, his Netherlands-based eponymous brand is perhaps one of the most exciting watchmakers in the independent scene. Using modified ETA movements and Stefan’s own talents as a watchmaker, Ketelaars watches are some of the most unique timepieces on the market. Launched in 2020 as the brand’s second collection, the watch we have here is the 3D Terra in Motion. While watchmakers will typically modify the back of their movements, Ketelaars leave the back of their movements relatively untouched and rework the dial side of the movement, giving their timepieces an entirely unique look and feel on the wrist. Perhaps most notably, the 3D Terra in Motion features a miniature Earth that rotates and acts as a day and night indicator. Furthermore, the
3D Terra in Motion also boasts an elevated balance wheel that sits on the timepiece’s dial, and a small hours and minutes dial that completes the trio. With the blued titanium hands matching the Earth’s blue oceans and the silver subdials popping against their hand hammered grey titanium backdrop, the Ketelaars 3D Terra in Motion is perhaps one of the most unique timepieces available in this price range. Encased within a simple stainless steel case and a boxed sapphire crystal, the 3D Terra in Motion wears uniquely on the wrist as its display provides the timepiece with an abundance of intrigue, while the contrastingly understated case allows all of the attention to slip by and be focused on the incredible dial.

A wonderful celebration of indie watchmaking, the 3D Terra in Motion demonstrates that even without a hulking budget, a plethora of watchmakers, and an abundance of machinery that creative and unique timepieces can still be produced to an incredible standard.
