Introduction
Founded in 2018 as a means for legendary Japanese watchmaker Hajime Asaoka to create serial production pieces, Kurono Tokyo stands as one of the most exciting microbrands in today's watchmaking industry. With Hajime's reputation as an exceptional watchmaker secured from decades of recognition for designing one-off timepieces in close collaboration with his clients, it was never in doubt that his serial production brand would take off. Launched in December 2020, the Grand Akane was debuted as Kurono Tokyo’s first artisanal-level timepiece. Featuring a 37mm stainless steel case with an entirely polished surface, where the Grand Akane really stands out from the rest of Kurono Tokyo’s offerings is its incredible Urushi dial. Featuring a ‘Hamon,’ or blade pattern, that is finished with the traditional Japanese chemical treatment before being sealed with an additional layer of suki-urushi (transparent lacquer), the Grand Akane’s dial sports an incredible fiery red and orange color that can completely change depending on the source and strength of the light beating down on it. With just 200 pieces produced, the Grand Akane is simultaneously one of Kurono Tokyo’s rarest and most sought-after timepieces.
