Introduction
Following the rise in popularity of recreational diving in the 1950 and 1960s, a trend appeared in watchmaking with the rise of so-called ‘Skin divers’ that featured improved water resistance compared to regular timepieces, but maintained a somewhat casual aesthetic compared to out-and-out dive watches. In a bid to innovate on the humble Skin Diver, Longines launched the Super Compressor ref. 7042 in 1958 with a dive bezel, plenty of luminescence, and its eponymous Super Compressor case. Patented by Ervin Piquerez SA (EPSA) in 1956, the Super Compressor case works by using the water pressure to press and seal the caseback against the case of the watch. With its dual-crown system and internal rotating bezel, the Super Compressor is a harmonious marriage between style and utility, earning its position as an icon of its category. Such an icon in fact, Longines have since decided to re-issue this classic, with the ref. L3.674.4.50.0 that we have here standing as one of the earlier references, launched in 2009. Boasting a 42mm stainless steel case with a black dial that is faithful to the original, this model is a contemporarily made timepiece that embodies the sporting spirit of the 1950s and 1960s.

THE DIAL
Fitted with the exact same dial layout as the original, the Legend Diver's black display features the model's characteristic luminescent indices and uniquely-shaped hands.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Inspired by the Super Compressor, a hulking timepiece for its time, the Legend Diver features the same 42mm diameter as its predecessor. While still large, with its lack of an external rotating bezel, it still wears and looks rather classical on the wrist.

Our Perspective
An iconic timepiece from within Longines' ranks, the Legend Diver carries on the Super Compressor's legacy with its stylish design, impressive utility, and timeless aesthetic that has proven rather popular over the decades since its debut.
