Introduction
The M.A.D.1 began as Maximilian Büsser's way of thanking the suppliers, friends and collectors who had supported MB&F, translating some of the creative spirit of his far more elaborate Horological Machines into something deliberately playful and accessible. Its inverted movement, lateral time display and wildly spinning triple-blade rotor made the original 2021 release an immediate sensation, ultimately leading to further editions offered to the wider collecting community under the separate M.A.D. Editions name.
Released in 2024, the M.A.D.1 Time to Love brought French artist and designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac's unmistakable visual language to Büsser's already unconventional creation. Limited to 999 pieces, the collaboration uses vivid primary colours across the signature triple-blade rotor, while playful details and a selection of colourful straps extend Castelbajac's aesthetic throughout the watch. The result is an especially fitting collaboration: two designers united by an instinct for turning familiar objects into something joyful, irreverent and immediately recognisable.

THE DIAL
The M.A.D.1 does away with a conventional dial and hands, displaying hours and minutes through rotating aluminium cylinders around the case band. For Time to Love, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac brings his characteristic use of primary colours to the watch, transforming its already unconventional architecture into an even more playful expression of mechanical timekeeping.
THE CONSTRUCTION
Measuring 42mm across and 18.8mm thick, the M.A.D.1 uses its considerable depth to accommodate the lateral time display and inverted movement architecture. Transparent sections expose the mechanics from multiple angles, while the Time to Love's colourful detailing and interchangeable straps allow Castelbajac's distinctive aesthetic to extend beyond the spinning rotor.
