Introduction
The M.A.D.1 began as Maximilian Büsser's way of thanking the suppliers, friends and collectors who had supported MB&F, translating some of the creative spirit of his far more elaborate Horological Machines into something deliberately playful and accessible. Its inverted movement, lateral time display and rapidly spinning triple-blade rotor made the original 2021 release an immediate sensation, eventually leading to further editions offered to the wider collecting community under the separate M.A.D. Editions name.
Released in 2024, the M.A.D.1 Time to Love brought French artist and designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac's unmistakable visual language to Büsser's unconventional creation. Limited to 999 pieces, the collaboration introduces Castelbajac's characteristic primary colours to the oversized rotor and surrounding details, accompanied by a selection of colourful interchangeable straps. Underneath the artistic treatment remains the wonderfully unconventional M.A.D.1 architecture, with time displayed laterally through rotating cylinders and the movement effectively turned upside down to place its most animated component centre stage.

THE DIAL
There is no conventional dial in the traditional sense. Hours and minutes are displayed laterally through rotating aluminium cylinders around the case, while Castelbajac's vivid primary colours animate the watch above. The unusual arrangement makes reading the time secondary to the kinetic spectacle that defines the M.A.D.1.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Measuring 42mm across and 18.8mm thick, the stainless steel case uses its considerable depth to accommodate the inverted movement and lateral time display. Transparent sections expose the mechanics from several angles, while interchangeable straps allow the colourful Time to Love theme to extend beyond the watch itself.

Condition

Our Perspective
Few collaborations make as much instinctive sense as this one. The M.A.D.1 was conceived as the playful side of Maximilian Büsser's watchmaking world, while Jean-Charles de Castelbajac has spent decades using bold colour and wit to challenge conventional design. Limited to 999 pieces, Time to Love amplifies everything that made the original M.A.D.1 such an unexpected success without losing its mechanical eccentricity.
