Introduction

Founded in 2005, it wasn’t long before MB&F began to develop a name for itself as a watchmaker that would venture out of the realm of normality and create timepieces that were as much art as they were designed to tell the time. Sitting on the precipice of where artistry, mechanics, horological heritage and design meet, MB&F’s timepieces have grown to become the market’s best-known and most-loved, and so in 2012 it was no surprise that they would launch a watch that would shock the horological industry, the HM5. Inspired by 1970s supercars and the rather obscure Amida Digitrend watch from the same period, the HM5 features a futuristic design language that reveals itself through a zirconium and stainless steel case shaped like the tail-end of a supercar that features louvres on their rear windows like the Lamborghini Miura, Lotus Esprit or Lancia Stratos – all cars MB&F cites as inspiration. In keeping with its rather distinctive construction, the HM5 also boasts an appropriately unique display, with two bi-directional jumping hours and trailing minutes markers that feed into its automotive aesthetic. Offered with green accents on the zirconium and stainless steel example we have here, the HM5 is a watch filled with powerful presence, unique inspiration and a surprisingly legible display that proves the MB&F HM5 is not only intelligently designed, but also beautifully executed.

THE DISPLAY

While not a conventional dial, the HM5 tells the time via two bi-directional jumping hours and trailing minutes markers that feed into its automotive aesthetic and make it a fun watch to wear and engage with.

THE CONSTRUCTION

Inspired by two unlikely sources; high-performance supercars and the rather obscure Amida Digitrend watch, the HM5 wears on the wrist with a unique presence as its case features a swooping design that boasts a wide stance and a unique mix of textures.

Our Perspective

A combination of two rather unlikely sources of inspiration, the HM5 goes to show that MB&F truly are revolutionary in their ability to create timepieces that captivate and excite; even if the resulting timepiece looks like nothing else on the market, for that is MB&F's strongest selling-point.
