Introduction

Founded in 2005, it wasn’t long before MB&F began to develop a name for itself as a watchmaker that would venture out of the realm of normality and create timepieces that were as much art as they were designed to tell the time. Sitting on the precipice of where artistry, mechanics, horological heritage and design meet, MB&F’s timepieces have grown to become the market’s best-known and most-loved, and so on their 10th anniversary in 2015, MB&F sought to give back to the watch community with a unique watch that was fun and continued in the brand’s tradition as a visually unique time-telling device. Indeed, they came up with the HMX. Building off of his childhood aspiration to be a car designer and inspired by the distinctive ‘Superleggera’ style of renowned Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring, Max designed the HMX as a watch that looked like a supercar. As you might tell, he succeeded and thus created the HMX’s swooping 46.8mm x 44.3mm titanium and stainless steel case in four different variants, with a wonderfully unusual time display. Drawing inspiration from driving watches, its lateral time display is viewable through the midcase, with the aid of dual reflective sapphire crystal prisms with an integrated magnifying lens that sits atop bi-directional jumping hours and a trailing minutes display. Fitted with an oil-filler cap on top, which offers an aesthetic treat and a handy way for a watchmaker to oil the jewelled bearings of the indication discs, the MB&F HMX is not only intelligently designed, but also beautifully executed.

THE OIL-FILLER CAPS

While designed to look like the top-down view of a car's engine, the HMX's oil caps are not just pretty design elements. Instead, they are fully functional oil caps that can be unscrewed to easily oil the jewelled bearings of the indication discs and ensure their smooth running. Intelligent design meets beautiful aesthetics.
