Introduction
Introduced in 2016 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Canadian-American Challenge Cup, the MB&F HM8 Can-Am translates one of motor racing’s most unrestricted eras into a Horological Machine. The legendary Can-Am series was renowned for minimal technical regulations and extraordinary performance, and its influence is immediately apparent in the HM8’s architecture. Sweeping Grade 5 titanium “roll bars” run across the sapphire-covered case like the protective structures of a racing car, framing a mechanical construction designed to be viewed as much as worn.
The HM8 also brought together ideas from two earlier MB&F creations. Its lateral display evolved from the HM5 driver’s watch, using optical prisms to project jumping hours and trailing minutes vertically towards the wearer, while the exposed battle-axe rotor recalls the architecture of the HM3. Measuring an imposing 49mm by 51.5mm, this white gold and titanium version houses an automatic Girard-Perregaux-based movement extensively reworked with MB&F’s own display module. The result is quintessential MB&F: less a conventional wristwatch than a miniature mechanical machine shaped by Max Büsser’s fascination with the cars and culture of his youth.

THE DIAL
Rather than a conventional dial, the HM8 displays jumping hours and trailing minutes on overlapping rotating discs positioned horizontally within the case. Sapphire optical prisms reflect the numerals through 90 degrees and magnify them for reading from the side of the wrist, a direct evolution of the driver's-watch concept previously explored with the HM5.
THE CONSTRUCTION
At 49mm by 51.5mm and 19mm thick, the HM8 is built around a complex multi-part case combining 18K white gold, Grade 5 titanium and extensive sapphire crystal. Polished titanium roll bars sweep over the movement like those of a Can-Am racer, while articulated front strap attachments help the substantial case conform more naturally to the wrist.

Condition
Watch is in overall near-mint condition. The case shows signs of careful wear. The blue leather strap shows some wear around the sizing holes, while the deployant clasp has a couple of very light surface marks. The watch comes with a guarantee certifcate dated August 2022 that is stamped "duplicate", as well as box and card holder.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
The HM8 is a particularly clear expression of what made early MB&F so disruptive. Its automotive inspiration isn't simply applied through colour or branding; the entire watch is constructed around the idea of a mechanical racing machine, from its titanium roll bars to its sideways driver-oriented display. Combining concepts pioneered by the HM3 and HM5, the Can-Am represents an important evolutionary point in the Horological Machine story and remains one of MB&F's most immediately recognisable creations.
