Introduction
Founded in 1881, Movado has become one of the most interesting watchmakers around with a longstanding history of making some incredible timepieces. While their modern brand is not up to the standard of their older examples, vintage timepieces like the Chronograph ref. 49036 that we have here is straight out of Movado's golden age. Constructed from 14k yellow gold, this classically designed chronograph blends a stunning construction with vintage fundamentals for a perfectly balanced end product. This extraordinary timepiece is immediately reminiscent of mid-century watchmaking with sharp faceted lugs, a flat bezel, and large oval pushers. Powered by Movado's manual wind cal. M95 movement, the ref. 49036, like some of the other Movado chronographs that came a few years before it endeavored to solve one common watchmaker's problem, the issue of servicing. With chronographs being as intricate as they are, servicing them was a costly, tedious process. As such, Movado created the modular movement, the cal. M90, where a chronograph module set onto a regular movement could be replaced in its entirety cheaply and quickly, thus improving efficiency. The cal. M95 in this ref. 49036 is the three-register version of the dual-register cal. M90 that Movado pioneered. A rare watch with an exciting link to so many of today's modern chronographs, this is undoubtedly an extraordinary timepiece that its next owner will cherish.

Condition
Overall condition is excellent. Under 10x magnification there is minor corrosion on the dial indexes. Case is very sharp and retains the original beveled edges. There is an engraving on the caseback as shown. Strap and buckle are later replacements.

Our Perspective
Unassuming in its design and execution for today's standards, this Movado timepiece is one of the earliest examples bearing a modular chronograph movement - an incredibly important piece of pioneering technology that countless brands still rely on to this day.
