Introduction
Founded in 1881, Movado has become one of the most interesting watchmakers around with a longstanding history of making some incredible timepieces. While the modern watchmaker Movado that we know of today is certainly not typically associated with high-end luxury watchmaking, the brand’s earlier years were filled with prestige as they earned a reputation as one of Switzerland’s finest watchmakers. By the 1940s, Movado had grown from relatively humble beginnings to one of the industry’s leading brands. As such, their watches were worn by some of the world’s elite and vintage timepieces like the “Big Calatrava” ref. 12747 that we have here is straight out of Movado's golden age. Debuted in the 1940s, the Big Calatrava, as it is known, is famed for its resemblance to the Patek Philippe Calatrava ref. 570, which was in production around the same time. Made of stainless steel and boasting a 35mm diameter, the ref. 12747 is a wonderfully dynamic dress watch that has become a vintage Movado collector’s dream. Retailed by Hausman & Co. as stamped on its dial at 12 o’clock, this example’s dial has aged to include a rich creamy yellow patina that gives it a wonderfully vintage aesthetic. With a thin bezel, long lugs, and a large winding crown, the ref. 12747 was way ahead of it time, and would perfectly slot into a modern watch collection, especially with its esteemed cal. 75 movement and large case for the time.

THE DIAL
Retailed by Hausman & Co., as indicated by its retailed stamp at 12 o'clock above Movado's own logo, this ref. 12747 is a wonderfully rare example of an already-rare reference.

THE CONSTRUCTION
A huge watch for its time, the ref. 12747 was known for its large 35mm diameter stainless steel case that was accompanied by a thin bezel to ensure that its dial was given as much real estate as possible.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in good overall condition. Case lugs show nice definition, with light surface corrosion visible in some areas and along some of the seams. The original bezel has a noticeable amount of pitting visible around the 4 o’clock area. The original dial has aged, with some patina and crazing visible on the surface, along with a few minor marks. The retailer and manufacture signatures on the dial are slightly faded. Movement shows light oxidation on the surface, and some rusting is visible on the ratchet wheel. Blued hands are clean showing little degradation. Watch comes on a generic strap and buckle. Please note: Watch is ticking at time of cataloging, but it does not keep time, and a service is needed.
Our Perspective
An incredibly rare piece from the world of vintage Movado, the Big Calatrava has become a cult classic for mid-century dress watch aficionados thanks to its rarity and resemblance to one of Patek's most famous models, and this example's co-signature doesn't hurt its desirability either.
