Introduction

Produced during the 1960s, the Movado Super Sub Sea Chronograph represents one of the most technically ambitious and visually distinctive sports chronographs of its era. Developed in collaboration with Zenith during a period when Movado was producing some of its most innovative professional watches, the Super Sub Sea Chronograph combined robust chronograph functionality with serious diving capability and highly unconventional case architecture. Powered by the respected manual-wind Mouvado cal. 146-HP movement, the model shared its distinctive “Carrée-Cambrée” case design with its Zenith counterpart, though Movado-branded examples are encountered considerably less frequently today. Characterized by flowing curved surfaces and bold proportions, the case reflected the experimental spirit of 1960s sports watch design while offering excellent wrist presence. Today, the Super Sub Sea Chronograph has become one of the most sought-after vintage Movado references among collectors of mid-century tool watches.

The dial features a highly legible chronograph layout with contrasting registers and bold luminous detailing designed for underwater visibility. Paired with the rotating bezel, the display combines diving functionality with classic motorsport-inspired chronograph aesthetics, creating a striking and highly balanced visual presentation.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

The stainless steel case showcases the distinctive “Carrée-Cambrée” architecture unique to the Zenith and Movado Super Sub Sea Chronographs. Defined by its curved rectangular profile and flowing integrated lines, the construction gives the watch a remarkably modern appearance for the era.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case has scratches and small nicks consistent with age, while the case back shows surface scratches. Both Movado-signed crowns remain well defined. The dial is excellent, with some discoloration to the lume and consistent orange colouring to the sub-dial numerals, inner bezel, and lume within the lollipop chronograph hand. The orange hour and minute hands are clean, with a crack visible in the lume of the hour hand. There are scratches present on the crystal. The watch is fitted with a folded-link steel bracelet with Movado-signed clasp showing surface marks and light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 29 links and fits approximately a 7 3/4” wrist.

Our Perspective

This Movado reference is much rarer than its twin model from Zenith. The case design is called “Carree-Cambree" and it is unique to the Zenith and Movado models in the Super Sub Sea line of chronographs. The colors, the case design, and the audacious placement of the inner bezel crown scream 1960s design.
