Omega Seamaster 166.01 18k PG for Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa of Bahrain

Introduction

Initially released in 1948 and based on watches used by airmen in WWII, the Omega Seamaster has become one of Omega’s best-known collections. Initially, a dress-style watch with thick lugs, the Seamaster was designed to promote daily wear while remaining functional for use in water with 62.5 meters of water resistance. However, the Seamaster eventually moved past its dressier beginning and became a fully-fledged dive watch, which makes the original dressier examples all the more charming. Offered here we have a 35mm Seamaster ref. 166.010 from the mid-1960s made of 18kt pink gold that speaks to its original dressy aesthetic with its leather strap and understated design that comes as a result of its flat bezel and simple lugs. Making this piece rather unique is the design of its silver dial, with an image of Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, whom was the first Emir of Bahrain from 1961 until his death in 1999, at 12 o’clock. Ordered on behalf of the Bahraini Royal Family directly from Omega, this timepiece represents Omega’s respect for the Royal Family, with Omega’s applied logo, which would normally be placed at 12 o’clock, placed at 6 o’clock, leaving space for Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa’s portrait.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Offered as one of the original dressier Seamaster variants, the ref. 166.010's 18kt pink gold construction combines a traditional dress watch design with a functional approach, with its slightly larger stature at 35mm, screw-down caseback and crown and 60m water resistance.

Condition

Watch is in very good overall condition. Case has thick lugs, with some light surface wear visible. The back of lugs have some visible scratches and a ding visible on the bottom surface of one of the lugs. The caseback has scratches and marks, possibly caused by an improper case opener. Original presentation dial with light spotting viisible on the surface and edge. Watch comes on a generic strap with an original Omega buckle that is pg plated.

Our Perspective

A dressy watch that boasts an impressively robust construction along with an exceptionally rare portrait of Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, this example is a prize example of vintage Omega's craftsmanship.
