Omega Seamaster Professional 300 2254.50 Stainless Steel

Introduction

Initially released in 1948 and based on watches used by airmen in WWII, the Omega Seamaster has become one of Omega’s best-known collections. Initially, a dress-style watch with thick lugs, the Seamaster was designed to promote daily wear while remaining functional for use in water with 62.5 meters of water resistance. However, the modern Seamaster that we know and love today was born nine years later, in 1957. This was when the Seamaster 300 was released after Omega was inspired to upgrade the Seamaster after they had 50 Seamaster cases with rubber O-ring gaskets tested in 1955, which led them to work with new materials and push their boundaries. As a result, they created the Seamaster 300, which featured a heavily luminescent dial and handset, a rotating bezel, a thick domed hesalite crystal, and double crown seals. Interestingly, while named the Seamaster 300, the watch was originally only rated for 200m of water resistance, with Omega insisting the watch could outperform the testing equipment. Either way, the Seamaster lived on as James Bond's watch of choice and now enjoys the privileged position in today’s market as one of the most iconic dive watches ever released. Offered here we have the Seamaster ref. 2254.50.00, a neo-vintage Seamaster 300 variant that has become known as the “Peter Blake” through its association with the explorer and sailor through his wearing it in Omega advertisements. Boasting a black dial with a wave pattern, large bright luminous hour markers, sword-shaped hands, and a black aluminum anodized bezel, the ref. 2254.50.00 offers the foundation of the Seamaster’s aesthetic with a slight twist through its very large upside-down triangle at 12 o’clock that helps differentiate it from other variants.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows surface scratches and small nicks along the edges of the mid-case and crown guards. The case back retains a well-defined Seamaster medallion. The bezel insert is reasonably clean, with a few surface marks visible. The winding crown and helium escape valve crown remain in excellent condition. The dial and hands are near mint. It is fitted with a steel bracelet showing light surface marks and negligible play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 12 links, 4 of which are removable, and fits approximately a 7½” wrist.

Our Perspective

An icon thanks to its heritage as a Seamaster, but also a favourite amongst Seamaster fans thanks to its ties to Peter Blake through Omega advertisements, the ref. 2254.50 is one of neo-vintage watchmaking's best-known divers.
