Introduction
Famed as the watch that was first worn on the moon during the Apollo moon landings, the Omega Speedmaster has long been known as one of watchmaking's most iconic timepieces. Keen to further link themselves with the Moon, Omega have launched a select number of limited edition Speedmaster variants that take inspiration from the Moon, with one of them being the example we have here, the Speedmaster ‘Dark Side of the Moon.’ Launched in 2013, and inspired by the far side of the Moon that is always cast in shadow due to its speed of rotation matching the Earth’s, the DSTOM is a fully blacked out Speedmaster variant that features an enlarged 44.25mm black ceramic construction with a black dial and a black textile strap. Boasting the Speedmaster’s iconic case design, the DSTOM is unmistakable as a Speedy, just with its unique aesthetic and slightly altered dial arrangement. Powered by the automatic cal. 9300 and thus boasting a date and only two subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock, the DSTOM is slightly different to the normal Speedmaster design. However, this doesn’t take away from its link to the Speedy’s heritage as the watch worn into space as several variants made their way up there. A lightweight and unique timepiece born from Omega’s passion for space and their link to it, the DSTOM is a wonderful watch that every collector ought to experience at some point in their collecting journey.

Our Perspective
An entirely modern take on the iconic Speedmaster, the DSTOM has in fact been proven to be rather ahead of its time, with ceramic only becoming increasingly popular as collectors seek out its scratch-resistant properties, sleek blacked-out aesthetic and lightweightedness.
