Introduction

Released in 1957 and based on their earlier chronographs from the 1920s and '30s, the Omega Speedmaster is one of the most iconic chronographs ever. Named after the purpose of the tachymeter along its bezel, the Speedmaster was designed for race car drivers and pilots to time events and make rapid calculations. While these adrenaline-fueled activities might not be for the faint-hearted, they weren't what made the Speedmaster so iconic - that was its use in space and on the Moon. Following a gruelling series of tests with several competing brands, the Speedmaster debuted in space as a piece of NASA standard-issue equipment during the Gemini program of 1965. Celebrating those very same Gemini Missions, the ref. 3597.05.00 that we have was launched in 1998 as a limited edition series of just 200 pieces. Boasting the Gemini Missions’ patch in its 9 o’clock subdial as is its only distinguishable detail that separates it from normal Speedmaster Professional models from the same era, the ref. 3597.05 is an understated, yet rare, watch indeed.

EYES ON THE STARS

Entirely consistent with the Speedmaster Professional "Moonwatch" at the time, the Gemini VII ref. 3597.05.00's only distinguishing feature on its dial is the patch commemorating the 1965 Gemini VII mission found in its 9 o'clock subdial.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Wearing with the same iconic aesthetic as almost every other Speedmaster Professional from the same era, the ref. 3597.05's 42mm construction will be familiar to Omega collectors thanks to its hesalite crystal, lyre lugs and stainless steel bracelet.

Our Perspective

Paying homage to the first set of NASA missions in which the Speedmaster was officially part of NASA's loadout for their astronauts, the ref. 3597.05 is high on the list of wants of any Omega collector.
