Famed as the watch that was first worn on the moon during the Apollo moon landings from 1969 and into the 1970s, the Omega Speedmaster has long been known as one of watchmaking's most iconic timepieces. Such its level of notoriety, it has even secured its very own day on social media whereby owners of Omega Speedmasters will wear and post about their watches, Speedy Tuesday – a tradition created by Robert-Jan in 2012. To celebrate this tradition, Omega launched a limited edition variant of the Speedmaster that took direct inspiration from an obscure Speedmaster reference that appeared in the Japanese science fiction TV show “Return of Ultraman” in 1971. Boasting the Speedmaster’s 42mm stainless steel case with its iconic lyre lugs, its physical construction remains unchanged from any other Speedmaster, but its hands, dial and bezel is where it differs. With orange inscriptions on its bezel and an orange central chronograph seconds hand, the Ultraman is immediately distinctive from its Speedy siblings. However, its dial hosts some more rather understated hallmarks of its position as a unique mode such as its orange luminous plots, its orange Speedmaster logo, the black glow-in-the-dark Ultraman silhouette that hides in the subdial at 9 o’clock and the orange 3-minute second in the subdial at 3 o’clock that references Ultraman’s ability to only remain in his superhero state for 3 minutes. Offered on a black and orange NATO strap the Ultraman celebrates what it is associated with while also celebrating the Speedmaster’s passionate group of collectors and remaining true to its heritage as a watchmaking icon - a task that is not as easy as it sounds.
