Introduction
The Ophion OPH 786 Vélos is one of those rare watches that manages punch above itsweight and forces us to consider some tough question. It leans heavily into classical design cues, with purist-pleasing Breguet numerals, teardrop lugs, and a guilloché dial.
That basketweave dial is incredibly well done, not by hand on a rose or straight-line engine, but engraved in a CNC mill, giving it a crisp, three-dimensional look that feels far more expensive than its price tag suggests.
Even the blued hands and numerals, though chemically treated rather than traditionally heat-blued, carry a convincing richness and contrast well against the salmon dial. The oversized arrow hour hand is a bold touch and a nod to the name, velos is Greek for “arrow”, and it adds personality to an otherwise restrained aesthetic. You’ll also notice a George Daniels-esque counterweight to the seconds hand.
The well-proportioned case, at 39 mm wide and just over 10 mm thick, hits the sweet spot. It’s substantial enough to suit modern attitudes without being gawky. The teardrop lugs are welded to the case band, uncommon at this price point today, and evoke mid-century aesthetics, finished with a mirror polish that the gleams bright.
Inside, the Soprod TT 718 movement offers a five-day power reserve and an elegant architecture inspired by 19th-century pocket watches. It’s surprisingly well decorated, with a grenaille, or “lead shot”, finish across the bridges.
Inside and out the OPH 786 Vélos is much better than it needs to be, or less expensive than it should be, thanks to smart design and modern technology. The execution is thoughtful enough to make its more than homage reinterpreting vintage codes for the modern world.
