Introduction
Founded by Japanese industrial designer Jiro Katayama in 2008, Otsuka Lotec has become one of the most distinctive names in contemporary independent watchmaking. Rather than drawing inspiration from traditional Swiss horology, Katayama's creations borrow heavily from industrial machinery, precision engineering and automotive design, resulting in watches that challenge conventional ideas of how time should be displayed. Produced in exceptionally small numbers and available almost exclusively within Japan, Otsuka Lotec has developed a cult following among collectors seeking originality over convention. The brand's growing international reputation was cemented in 2024 when it received the Challenge Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) for the No. 6.
Introduced in late 2024 and entering production in 2025, the No. 5 Kai continues that philosophy with an entirely new interpretation of the satellite-hour display. Combining an in-house jumping-hour module with a proven Miyota automatic movement, it transforms a familiar calibre into something visually captivating and mechanically engaging. The watch's architectural case, oversized sapphire crystal and unconventional display create an unmistakably industrial aesthetic while remaining surprisingly intuitive to read. It is a perfect example of modern independent watchmaking that prioritises creativity, engineering and individuality in equal measure.

THE DIAL

THE CONSTRUCTION
The brushed stainless steel case introduces a new architectural design to the Otsuka Lotec collection, with pronounced lug hoods, an off-centre crown and a high-domed sapphire crystal contributing to its distinctive mechanical character and impressive wrist presence.

Our Perspective
Otsuka Lotec has rapidly become one of the most exciting names in independent watchmaking by refusing to follow established conventions. The No. 5 Kai captures everything that makes the brand so compelling—innovative engineering, industrial design and genuine originality. With production limited and demand growing rapidly following the brand's international recognition, it is a watch that feels every bit as collectible as it does unconventional.
