Introduction
Founded by Japanese industrial designer Jiro Katayama in 2008, Otsuka Lotec has become one of the most original names in contemporary independent watchmaking. Rather than taking inspiration from traditional Swiss horology, Katayama looks to industrial machinery, precision instruments and mechanical engineering, creating watches that rethink how time can be displayed. Produced in exceptionally small numbers and sold primarily within Japan, the brand achieved international recognition in 2024 when it won the Challenge Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG).
Introduced in 2025, the No. 5 Kai is a complete reimagining of one of Otsuka Lotec's earliest designs. Featuring a proprietary satellite-hour display housed within a newly designed stainless steel case, it combines inventive engineering with the clean industrial aesthetic that has become synonymous with the brand.

THE DIAL
The No. 5 Kai replaces a conventional hour hand with Otsuka Lotec's ingenious satellite-hour display, where rotating hour discs travel around a central axis before aligning with the minute scale. Combined with the open architectural layout and exposed mechanical elements, the display is both highly legible and unmistakably industrial.
THE CONSTRUCTION
The brushed stainless steel case was entirely new for the No. 5 Kai, featuring pronounced hooded lugs, an off-centre crown and a dramatically domed sapphire crystal. Its architectural form perfectly complements the watch's mechanical display while giving it a distinctive presence on the wrist.
