Introduction
Founded by Japanese industrial designer Jiro Katayama in 2008, Otsuka Lotec has become one of the most distinctive names in contemporary independent watchmaking. Rather than looking to traditional Swiss horology for inspiration, Katayama draws heavily from industrial machinery, automotive instrumentation and precision engineering, creating watches whose mechanical displays are as important to their identity as the movements beneath them. Produced in extremely small numbers and available almost exclusively within Japan, Otsuka Lotec has developed a cult following among collectors seeking something genuinely unconventional.
The No. 6 has become perhaps the defining expression of Katayama's approach. Its brushed stainless steel case, exposed screws and monochromatic display evoke the gauges and measuring instruments found in machinery, while the unusual double-retrograde indication transforms the simple act of telling the time into mechanical theatre. Its significance within the Otsuka Lotec story was cemented in 2024 when the No. 6 received the Challenge Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève, bringing Katayama's work to a far wider international audience.

THE DIAL
Inspired by the analogue gauges found in cars and industrial machinery, the No. 6 dispenses with conventional centrally mounted hands in favour of separate retrograde indications for the hours and minutes. Its monochromatic silver display, bold scales, exposed screws and red accents give the watch the appearance of a precision measuring instrument rather than a traditional wristwatch.
THE CONSTRUCTION
The brushed stainless steel case reinforces the No. 6's deliberately industrial character, with exposed screws, a stepped bezel and distinctive wire-style lugs contributing to its instrument-like appearance. Measuring 42.6mm across, the case gives the unconventional display considerable presence while remaining entirely faithful to Katayama's functional design language.
