Panerai Ferrari California FER00030 Flyback Chronograph Automatic

How do I bid? Start here

Introduction

Sharing an Italian heritage, flair for the unique and a famed sense of craftsmanship, Panerai and Ferrari began a collaboration in 2005 for Panerai to create a whole host of timepieces under the Ferrari brand. Following the end of Girard Perregaux’s licensing agreement with Ferrari in 2005, Panerai’s then-CEO, Angelo Bonati, reached out to Ferrari and had a meeting with Jean Todt to see if the two Italian powerhouses could join forces, and they did. As a result, Panerai created a whole host of distinctly Italian timepieces for the famed automaker, such as the Scuderia Chronograph, the Scuderia Rattrapante, the Scuderia Granturismo Chronograph, and the California Flyback ref. FER00030 that we have here.

Launched in 2009 to celebrate Ferrari’s debut of the California, their then-latest touring car, the ref. FER00030 is made of stainless steel and powered by Panerai’s automatic cal. OP XIX flyback chronograph movement. Extending its aggressive and bold construction’s aesthetic into its dial, the ref. FER00030 boasts a black display with strong red accents such as those seen along the first quarter of its periphery through its chapter ring and numerals, along its hands, and its subdial registers. Further touches of Ferrari’s input can be seen on its carbon fiber caseback where the Prancing Horse is front and center, and on the ref. FER00030’s dial where its tachymeter is translated to Italian. Measuring 45mm in diameter ad 16.8mm tall, the resulting timepiece is a visually distinct and imposing watch that embodies Ferrari’s spirit as an automaker that doesn’t shy away from embracing their own tradition, much like how Panerai stuck to their guns and created a watch that fit their design language just as much as it fit Ferrari’s.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Lacking any Panerai branding and boasting Ferrari's logo alongside the California's own branding, this Flyback California's black and red dial leaves no ambiguity as to why it was created, or what it was inspired by - Ferrari's then-latest touring car.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Featuring a large and loud 45mm stainless steel cushion-shaped case and heavily-knurled pushers and crown, the ref. FER00030 very much fits within the spirit of the incredible presence that Ferrari communicates through cars like their California.

Condition

Watch is in near-mint overall condition. There is some minor wear visible on the case sides, as well as some very light wear on the screw slots from strap removal.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

A loud and proud watch with a clear link to Ferrari's aesthetic thanks to some subtle design choices that don't belittle Panerai's contribution, the California Flyback ref. FER00030 is unapologetically bold in more ways than one.
