Introduction
Arguably one of the most iconic watchmakers in the industry, Panerai are beloved by their army of passionate collectors, or ‘Paneristi’ as they are known for their larger-than-life timepieces, signature details and rich history as a military-worn dive watch manufacturer. Only coming into the public domain in the 1993, Panerai’s early timepieces are naturally cult classics due to their unyielding character and rich heritage. Offered here we have the stainless steel Luminor Marina Militare PAM217 from 2005, featuring a black dial with a running seconds subdial at 3 o’clock – a combination that has become emblematic of Panerai’s dial layouts. Offered Panerai’s historical militaristic sizing, the PAM217 comes in at 47mm in diameter, which allows it to remain entirely robust and on-task as a dive watch, but with its winding crown and crown locking mechanism all found at 9 o’clock, which ensures the watch is more wearable than it would otherwise be if it was at 3 o’clock due to the crown locking mechanism getting in the way of its wearer’s hand, provided they wear their watch on their left wrist. Offered as a limited edition of just 1000 pieces, the PAM217 features an exhibition caseback that proudly displays its manual-wind cal. OP XI movement, which caps off a wonderfully robust and impressive timepiece.

THE DIAL
Boasting sandwich black dial with sunken luminescent hour markers and golden hands, the PAM217's display retains Panerai's historical design down to its running seconds subdial at 3 o'clock.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Made of stainless steel, the PAM217 wears with an impressive heft thanks to its large 47mm construction that results in a historically accurate wearing experience.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
The watch is in overall near-mint condition. The stainless steel case has some light marks from use, with a couple of more noticeable marks on the back of the lugs. The dial and hands are like new. It is fitted with a leather strap and a PANERAI-signed steel pin buckle showing surface marks. The watch comes complete with its boxes, papers, booklet, spare strap, and tool.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
A historically accurate recreation of Panerai's earliest watches, the PAM217 takes the Italian watchmaker's original design language and brings it into the 21st century with modern watchmaking techniques, resulting in a watch that combines the best of both worlds.
