Introduction

Patek Philippe's shaped watches of the 1940s and 1950s represent some of the manufacture's most expressive designs, a period when traditional watchmaking was accompanied by increasingly adventurous approaches to case architecture. Among the more distinctive creations was the ref. 2424, introduced in 1946 and produced until approximately 1952. Its defining feature is a set of dramatic, sculptural lugs that sweep away from the rectangular case, earning the reference its evocative 'Flame Lugs' nickname. The design is a wonderful example of the creativity that characterised Patek Philippe's mid-century dress watches, combining conventional horology with an almost jewellery-like approach to form.

Dating to 1951, this example is crafted in 18K yellow gold and measures an impressive 32mm by 44mm, giving it considerably more presence than many contemporary rectangular watches. The substantial case frames a silvered dial with applied faceted quarter hour markers, circular hours and a subsidiary seconds display at six o'clock. Powered by the manually wound calibre 10-200, the watch combines its striking exterior with the traditional movement architecture of the period. The ref. 2424 is associated with cases manufactured by Ponti Gennari and dials supplied by Stern Frères, two important names in Patek Philippe's historical production network.

Condition

Watch is in overall very good condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches, with a few more noticeable scratches to the crown side of the case. The case back shows some small surface marks, while the overall case definition remains excellent. Fully legible hallmarks remain on the back of one lug and the crown side of the case. The dial exhibits extensive, irregular crazing and discolouration, with oxidation to the applied hour markers. The hands remain clean. It is fitted with a leather strap and 18K yellow gold Patek Philippe pin buckle showing surface scuffs. Comes with a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

The ref. 2424 is a reminder that Patek Philippe's historical catalogue extends far beyond the restrained elegance of the Calatrava. Its exuberant flame lugs transform a relatively conventional rectangular watch into something genuinely sculptural, reflecting the confidence and creativity of post-war design. With its substantial yellow gold case, manually wound movement and accompanying Extract from the Archives, this 1951 example offers an appealing opportunity to explore a more unconventional side of vintage Patek Philippe.
