Introduction

During the 1970s, Patek Philippe explored a more adventurous approach to dress watch design, producing a remarkable variety of shaped cases, integrated bracelets and unconventional dials. While the manufacture remained committed to traditional watchmaking, these creations reflected the changing tastes of an era in which jewellery and horology increasingly overlapped. Precious-metal bracelets became integral to the design of the watch itself, with elaborate textures and architectural forms replacing the more restrained cases and leather straps of earlier decades. Hardstone dials, particularly those fashioned from lapis lazuli, onyx and other decorative materials, provided a striking contrast to these elaborate gold constructions. Today, these watches represent a fascinating chapter in Patek Philippe's history, offering collectors an alternative to the familiar Calatrava and complicated references for which the manufacture is best known.

Manufactured in 1979, this Patek Philippe ref. 3733/1J is an especially attractive example of the period's distinctive design language. Its rectangular 18K yellow gold case is characterised by horizontal ribbing that continues uninterrupted into the integrated gold bracelet. The deep blue lapis lazuli dial provides a dramatic counterpoint to the warm gold construction, its natural stone surface lending each example an individual character. Measuring approximately 33 × 29mm, the watch combines substantial visual presence with elegant proportions, while the manually wound calibre 215 maintains the slim profile essential to its design. Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming its original lapis lazuli dial and yellow gold bracelet, this example captures the creative confidence of Patek Philippe's late-1970s dress watches.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The dial is fashioned from natural lapis lazuli, a decorative hardstone prized for its rich blue colour and distinctive mineral character. Its minimalist presentation allows the stone itself to become the focal point, providing a striking contrast to the elaborate yellow gold case. The accompanying Extract from the Archives confirms the original lapis lazuli dial.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

The rectangular 18K yellow gold case features pronounced horizontal ribbing that extends seamlessly into the integrated bracelet. This continuous architectural treatment creates a distinctive sculptural appearance, blurring the distinction between watch and jewellery..
