Introduction
Patek Philippe's design language changed markedly during the late 1960s and 1970s, embracing increasingly minimalist cases, vivid blue dials and highly integrated precious-metal bracelets. The Golden Ellipse, introduced in 1968, became the best-known expression of this new aesthetic, but its influence extended to a broader family of watches that shared many of the same visual codes. The ref. 4114 is an intriguing example, as despite frequently being described as an Ellipse, its perfectly round case means it does not possess the elliptical proportions that technically define the collection.
Dating to 1974, this ref. 4114/1J nevertheless captures much of the character associated with Patek Philippe's Ellipse-era design. Its compact 25mm round case is fashioned from 18K yellow gold and flows directly into a beautifully textured integrated gold mesh bracelet. The blue soleil-finished Sigma dial provides the focal point, punctuated only by slender applied gold baton hour markers and matching hands. Inside is the manually wound calibre 175, whose ultra-thin construction allowed Patek Philippe to maintain the watch's exceptionally restrained profile. Whether considered an Ellipse relative or simply an elegant 1970s Patek Philippe dress watch, the ref. 4114/1J is a particularly pure expression of the manufacture's design during the period.

THE DIAL
The blue soleil-finished Sigma dial is remarkably restrained, with applied yellow gold baton hour markers and slender matching hands providing the only interruption to its rich surface. Its combination of saturated blue and minimal gold furniture closely reflects the aesthetic associated with Patek Philippe's Golden Ellipse watches of the period.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The approximately 25mm round case is fashioned from 18K yellow gold with brushed and polished surfaces and a snap-on case back. It flows directly into an integrated woven 18K yellow gold mesh bracelet with a signed folding clasp, making the bracelet an integral part of the watch's overall architecture rather than simply an attachment.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows some light scuffs to the bezel and scratches around the edge of the case back. The case back shows surface scratches and retains three well-defined hallmarks. The blue Sigma dial is in near-mint condition, with some light marks to the hands. The integrated 18K yellow gold bracelet is in excellent condition, with light surface wear, some wear to the Calatrava Cross on the clasp, and a partially legible hallmark on the clasp. Comes with a service box and inner cushion. Watch was service sealed prior to being photographed for this auction.
Our Perspective
The ref. 4114 is interesting precisely because it sits just outside an obvious category. Its round case prevents it from being a Golden Ellipse in the strict geometric sense, yet its blue Sigma dial, extraordinary simplicity, ultra-thin movement and integrated gold mesh bracelet unmistakably belong to the same period of Patek Philippe design.
