Introduction
Famed for their exploits in the complicated side of watchmaking, Patek Philippe’s reputation as one of the best watchmakers in the world is something that serves as no surprise. Firmly rooted within the so-called “Holy Trinity,” it is timepieces like this Perpetual Calendar Moonphase ref. 5039J that maintains Patek Philippe ‘s place at the zenith of watchmaking. Launched as the successor to the ref. 3940, the ref. 5039 had big boots to fill, and fill them it did. Produced between 1994 and 2007, the ref. 5039 was popularized for the distinctive hobnail-textured bezel that adds an elegant sense of structure to its otherwise-reserved 35mm circular case. Sitting rather thin at just 9mm tall, the ref. 5039 showcases Patek’s ability to pack a lot of watchmaking inside of a small watch, with its silvered dial boasting subdials for its day, date, month, leap year, moonphase, and 24-hour indicators. Powered by the automatic cal. 240/114 movement, the ref. 5039 showcases splendid finishing behind its exhibition caseback and across its architecture. Wound via a micro-rotor, it shows off as much mechanics as possible. Reminiscent of Patek’s vintage timepieces thanks to its svelte sizing and mid-century styling, the ref. 5039 has become a true classic amongst collectors, and for very good reason.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in excellent overall condition. The gold case shows signs of use and light wear on the hobnail bezel. The hallmarks at the 9 o'clock side of the case are still sharp and fully visible. The dial is in near-mint condition showing no visible wear. The PM indicator portion of the 24 hr subdial has aged to a beautiful dark tone. The Day pointed hand has oxidized as shown in the images.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
A spectacular example of Patek Philippe's attractive sensibilities, the ref. 5039J has everything that Patek collectors have come to cherish, from its complex movement and its reserved dial to its impressive finishing and immaculately executed construction.
