Introduction
Introduced in 2006, the Patek Philippe ref. 5960 was a landmark watch for the manufacture, combining an annual calendar with a flyback chronograph and becoming the first self-winding chronograph developed and manufactured entirely in-house by Patek Philippe. Originally offered in precious metals, the collection took an unexpected turn in 2014 with the introduction of the ref. 5960/1A-001 in stainless steel, giving one of Patek Philippe’s most sophisticated modern complications a distinctly sportier character.
The ref. 5960/1A-001 combines its 40.5mm steel case with an integrated-style steel bracelet and a highly distinctive dial layout. Day, date and month are displayed through three apertures across the upper half of the dial, accompanied by a power-reserve indication, while the flyback chronograph is condensed into a single combined counter at 6 o’clock. This example features the black dial, which was produced for only a short period of time, with its monochromatic palette punctuated by a vivid red chronograph hand, creating one of the most contemporary and coveted interpretations of the 5960.

THE DIAL
The black dial gives this steel 5960 a particularly sporting character, with applied faceted hour markers and luminous hands contrasted by the bright red central chronograph hand. Three apertures display the day, date and month across the upper half of the dial, while the cleverly arranged register at 6 o’clock combines the chronograph indications into a single display, allowing a remarkably complicated watch to remain exceptionally legible.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 40.5mm stainless steel case represents a notable departure from the precious-metal 5960s that preceded it, giving the annual calendar chronograph a more casual and contemporary personality. Its polished surfaces flow into the distinctive multi-link steel bracelet, creating an unusually integrated aesthetic for a complicated Patek Philippe and one that sets the 5960/1A apart from its precious-metal siblings.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel case shows surface scratches and marks. The display case back is clean, with some light marks around the edge. The winding crown shows some surface marks, while the pushers and correctors are all in excellent condition. The dial and hands are in near-mint condition. The steel bracelet shows surface scuffs and scratches. The bracelet is fitted with 15 links, 5 of which are removable, and fits approximately a 6¾” wrist. There are 2 spare links included. Comes with the inner and outer boxes, Certificate of Origin, booklets, document holder, and setting pin.
Our Perspective
The ref. 5960/1A occupies an unusual position within modern Patek Philippe: a genuinely complicated watch rendered in stainless steel and given an unexpectedly sporting personality. The black dial takes that idea even further, with its red chronograph hand and intricate yet highly legible display giving the watch a character quite unlike the precious-metal 5960s. For collectors, it combines an important in-house chronograph movement, a highly practical annual calendar and one of Patek Philippe’s more unconventional modern designs.
