Patek Philippe Automatic 3580 Back-Winding Silver Dial

How do I bid? Start here

Introduction

An incredibly unusual variant of the Patek Philippe Ellipse, the ref. 3580 is a 35mm oval-shaped stainless steel timepiece with brushed finishing throughout its construction, allowing for an impressive wrist presence thanks to its visual consistency. Fitted with a gorgeous understated silver dial, the ref. 3580 harkens back to Patek's desire to refrain from distracting the wearer from the incredible craftsmanship within their timepiece. Powered by the automatic cal. 350 movement, the ref. 3580 is indeed a Back-Wind watch, whereby its crown has been removed from the case's side and placed on the caseback. This move was inspired by the technology in battery-operated watches, as they never needed their crown for resetting since their batteries wouldn't run out – much like an automatic timepiece if it is continuously worn. A symbol of modernity, progress, and technical innovation, the ref. 3580 is a wonderful testament to Patek and their willingness to step out of their comfort zone and seek inspiration in some of the most unusual places – even if that place is battery-powered watches.

THE DISPLAY
THE DISPLAY

This particular Ellipse has a wider bezel than the standard and a Space-Age feel, which is consistent with the period. Furthermore, its silver dial adds to this widened design through its monochromatic aesthetic matching its stainless steel surroundings.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Wearing incredibly comfortably on the wrist, the ref. 3580's squared oval 35mm-wide stainless steel case perfectly slots onto the divot behind your hand. Additionally, its crown-less design means it is perfectly symmetrical.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information. Please note that the watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Condition

The 35.5 x 40.5mm stainless steel case is in excellent condition, with some signs of use on the case sides and light marks on the front and light corrosion around the case back. The decagonal case back is very clean and incorporates the winding crown for the automatic movement. The silver no-lume dial is in outstanding condition, featuring applied hour markers and matching no-lume hands. The watch comes on a poor condition Credor signed strap with a generic buckle. Please note that the watch ticks at time of cataloging, but timekeeping is poor and a service is recommended.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

An icon in Patek's historical catalog, the ref. 3580 has become synonymous with Patek's efforts to offer new watches that break from their convention over the years. Made of steel and boasting a rather unusual design, the ref. 3580 has become a collector favourite for all the right reasons.
