Introduction
Typically known for its traditional dress watch aesthetic, the Calatrava is perhaps one of Patek Philippe’s most emblematic timepieces, with its precious metal case, leather straps, and elegant dials. Featuring all of those very tenets of design is the famed Calatrava ref. 1491 that we have here. Launched in 1940 and produced for a lengthy 25 years, the ref. 1491 is a central piece of the Calatrava puzzle. Weighing in at 34mm in diameter, the ref. 1491 would have been a large timepiece for its day. Sporting a stunning off-white dial with applied sword-shaped indices, the ref. 1491 features a matching set of 18kt rose gold dial furniture and hands to match its 18kt rose gold construction. Featuring beautifully ornate scrolled lugs that curve dramatically around themselves, this beautifully designed timepiece hugs the wrist and wears close to the skin. With tight lines and elegant curves, this example is preserved in wonderful condition and was clearly cherished during its long life from 1952 until now.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

Condition
Watch is in very good overall condition. Case has soft edges due to previous detailing and wear. There is light wear visible at the seam to open the caseback, but is otherwise free from any noteworthy marks. The indelible dial is in good overall condition, with some spotting and oidation primarily along the edge as seen in the image. There are also some scratches between the 1 and 2 index. The raised PP Geneve signature is strong and clean. Watch comes with a PPCo 18k buckle, a vintage box and the Extract from the Archives.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
A beautifully designed piece of mid-century horological engineering, the ref. 1491 showcases just how a typically reserved collection like the Calatrava could be given a subtle yet impactful piece of exuberance.
