Introduction

Introduced in 1950, the Patek Philippe ref. 2459 belongs to a small group of unusually large Calatravas produced during the early post-war period. At approximately 37mm, its dimensions were substantial for the era, but it is the architecture surrounding that scale that gives the reference its distinctive character. An angled bezel leads into dramatically downturned lugs whose rounded profile earned the watch its charming “Topolino” nickname — Italian for “little mouse” — creating a silhouette quite unlike the more restrained Calatravas of the period.

Dating to the early 1950s, the present ref. 2459J is a second-series example, pairing its 18K yellow gold case with a silvered matte dial, applied gold Arabic and dagger indexes, dauphine hands and subsidiary seconds. Inside is Patek Philippe’s manually wound calibre 12'''400, which replaced the calibre 12'''120 found in earlier examples. Rarely encountered and remarkably modern in scale, the ref. 2459 combines the elegant simplicity expected of a vintage Calatrava with considerably greater wrist presence than most of its contemporaries.

THE DIAL

THE DIAL

The silvered matte dial is classically restrained, combining applied gold Arabic numerals and dagger indexes with sharply formed dauphine hands. Subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock completes the balanced composition. Its relative simplicity places the emphasis firmly on proportion, allowing the unusually generous diameter of the ref. 2459 to give an otherwise traditional Calatrava dial considerable presence.

THE CONSTRUCTION

THE CONSTRUCTION

At approximately 37mm, the ref. 2459 was exceptionally large for a Patek Philippe dress watch of the early 1950s. Its angled bezel and pronounced downturned “mouse ear” lugs give the case its distinctive character, softening its considerable diameter while creating the unusual profile responsible for the reference’s familiar Topolino nickname.

Condition

Watch is in overall good condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows numerous scratches and nicks. The hallmark on the case side remains legible, while the case back has a small gouge. The winding crown has lost most of its gold-coloured surface. The dial shows significant wear to the minute markers around the outer edge, along with numerous scratches and surface marks. The hands remain reasonably clean. The crystal shows numerous scratches. It is fitted with a brown leather strap and gold-coloured pin buckle.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

The ref. 2459 is exactly the sort of vintage Patek Philippe whose significance becomes clearer once it is on the wrist. Its near-37mm diameter feels remarkably contemporary, yet the silvered dial, yellow gold construction and hand-wound movement remain quintessentially 1950s Patek Philippe. Add the wonderfully distinctive Topolino lugs and relatively scarce production, and it becomes one of the more characterful oversized Calatravas of the post-war period.
