Introduction
Introduced in 1932, the Patek Philippe Calatrava established a design philosophy that would become central to the manufacture's identity. Its debut coincided with a pivotal moment in Patek Philippe's history, following the acquisition of the company by brothers Jean and Charles Henri Stern. The original ref. 96 introduced a restrained aesthetic inspired by the principles of Bauhaus design, favouring clarity, proportion and simplicity over elaborate decoration. Throughout the following decades, Patek Philippe developed numerous interpretations of this formula, introducing subtle variations in case architecture, dial design and proportions while preserving the essential character of the Calatrava. The ref. 2484, introduced during the early 1950s, belongs to this period of creative experimentation, when the manufacture explored increasingly architectural approaches to the traditional round dress watch.
Dating to the 1950s, this ref. 2484J is distinguished by its unusual stepped case design, which lends a distinctly sculptural quality to an otherwise classical dress watch. Crafted from 18K yellow gold and measuring 32.5mm in diameter, the case features a stepped bezel complemented by similarly articulated lugs, creating an elegant interplay of polished surfaces and geometric forms. The silver dial provides a restrained contrast, with applied yellow gold sword-shaped hour markers and matching hands contributing to its refined appearance. Beneath the dial sits Patek Philippe's manually wound calibre 10-200, a movement widely employed in the manufacture's elegant time-only watches of the period. Combining traditional Calatrava proportions with more expressive case construction, the ref. 2484J offers an appealing example of Patek Philippe's mid-century design language.

THE DIAL
The silver dial features applied yellow gold sword-shaped hour markers and matching hands, creating a clean and balanced composition. Its understated design places particular emphasis on the contrasting textures and geometric forms of the case, reflecting the classical principles that have defined the Calatrava collection since its introduction.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 32.5mm case is crafted from 18K yellow gold and features a distinctive stepped bezel that adds depth to its classical round profile. This architectural treatment continues into the lugs, whose angular, stepped construction gives the watch a particularly distinctive appearance. The combination of geometric detailing and polished gold surfaces reflects Patek Philippe's mid-century approach to dress watch design.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

Condition
Watch is in overall very good condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches and small nicks, particularly around the edge of the bezel. The case back shows some small nicks, while a hallmark on the back of one lug remains well defined. The dial exhibits crazing across its surface, with patches of discolouration. The applied hour markers show some patina, while the hands have light surface marks. It is fitted with a leather strap and gold-coloured pin buckle.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
The ref. 2484J offers a distinctive interpretation of the classic Calatrava, with its stepped bezel and architectural lugs lending character to an otherwise understated design. Its elegant proportions and traditional manual-winding movement make it an appealing example of Patek Philippe's mid-century watchmaking.
