Introduction
Among the many references that define the golden age of Patek Philippe, the Calatrava reference 2509 stands as one of the manufacture's finest post-war dress watches. Produced throughout the 1950s, it perfectly embodies the restrained elegance that has become synonymous with the Calatrava collection since its introduction in 1932. With its beautifully balanced 35mm case, slender bezel and elongated faceted lugs, the reference 2509 represents the evolution of the classic Calatrava aesthetic into a slightly larger and more contemporary form, while remaining unmistakably rooted in the principles of timeless design.
Powered by the celebrated manual-wind calibre 12-400, the reference 2509 is admired not only for its elegant proportions but also for its exceptional movement, regarded as one of the finest manually wound calibres produced by Patek Philippe during the period. This example is crafted in 18K rose gold, a considerably less frequently encountered metal than yellow gold, lending the watch an additional level of rarity and warmth. Further enhancing its appeal is the engraved "S&L" monogram to the case back, denoting its delivery through the renowned Caracas retailer Serpico y Laino. Rather than appearing on the dial, as seen on a small number of examples, the discreet retailer engraving preserves the purity of the dial while still providing a tangible link to one of the most celebrated names in vintage Patek Philippe collecting. Elegant, historically significant and beautifully proportioned, the reference 2509R remains one of the great Calatravas of the twentieth century.

THE DIAL
The silver dial exemplifies the restrained elegance for which the Calatrava is renowned, featuring applied gold hour markers, dauphine hands and a crosshair small seconds display. Free from retailer branding, its uncluttered layout allows the balanced proportions and refined detailing to take centre stage.
THE CONSTRUCTION
The 35mm 18K rose gold case is distinguished by its elegant proportions and slim bezel, characteristics that have made the reference 2509 one of the most admired vintage Calatravas. Completing the watch is an engraved "S&L" on the case back, a discreet reminder of its delivery through the celebrated retailer Serpico y Laino.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The rose gold case shows light surface scratches. The case back retains well-defined Serpico y Laino and 18K engravings. The hallmark on the crown side of the case remains legible. The dial is in excellent condition, with a patch of degradation to the edge near 8 o’clock, a small mark and scratch near 3 o’clock, and a couple of other minor surface marks. There is no retailer signature on the dial. The hands remain clean. It is fitted with a black leather strap and a gold Patek Philippe pin buckle. Watch comes with an Extract of the Archives that notes the watch was produced in 1953.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
The reference 2509 occupies a special place within the Calatrava lineage, combining ideal mid-century proportions with one of Patek Philippe's finest manual-wind movements. The rarity of the rose gold case already makes this an especially attractive example, while the Serpico y Laino provenance, preserved through the engraved "S&L" case back rather than a co-signed dial, adds an additional layer of historical significance without compromising the purity of the watch's design.
