Introduction

Easily situated amongst the most iconic dress watches ever, the Patek Philippe Calatrava embodies the very essence of what a classically-styled timepiece should look like. Defining the entire market niche in 1932 when it debuted, the Calatrava has become the foundation of Patek Philippe’s elegant offerings, with the collection growing to include a multitude of references of various designs across a variety of dials, materials, complications and more. Offered here we have the Calatrava ref. 3457 which was launched in the early 1960s and produced for a short number of years during the Calatrava collection's most formative period within the modern watchmaking era as the Calatrava earned its reputation as Patek Philippe’s premier dress watch. Boasting Patek's esteemed design language, the ref. 3457 features a 28.5mm 18kt yellow gold case with a sloped bezel featuring a coin edge texture on its outside and a polished edge along its inside, but complete with engravings that act as extensions of its applied hour markers that lie atop its Hausmann & Co. co-signed champagne dial. An exercise in minimalism, as per the Calatrava’s Bauhaus-inspired design language, the Calatrava’s clean aesthetic has been the bedrock of its offering for decades, on which the ref. 3457 builds upon.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Featuring a pristine champagne dial, this example's secret sauce is its retailer co-signature at 6 o'clock, with Hausmann & Co.'s name printed at 6 o'clock, which marks this as an examle that was originally sold by the Roman retailer.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

While its 28.5mm diameter case might seem rather svelte by today's standards, the ref. 3457J still carries an impressive wrist presence thanks to its dual-finish bezel.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
TIMING MACHINE READOUT

While we couldn't get a readout on our timing machine, the watch does seem to be running and keeping good time.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The yellow gold case remains very well defined, with a couple of small nicks visible on the rear of the upper left lug, while all hallmarks remain crisp. The reeded yellow gold bezel remains in excellent condition, with sharp engraved hour markers to the inner section. The champagne dial remains excellent, with crisp text including the double Haussmann & Co. signature and a couple of light surface marks, while the hands remain clean. It is fitted with a new Collectability leather strap and a yellow gold Patek pin buckle, both remaining in excellent condition.

Our Perspective

A rare and visually unique Calatrava reference, the ref. 3457J is a wonderfully rare corner of vintage Patek collecting that reveals one of the joys of collecting mid-century Patek, with all of its rare and obscure references that present different wearing experiences to the more common references.
