Introduction
Introduced in 1932, the Patek Philippe Calatrava established a design language that would come to define the classical Swiss dress watch. Its restrained proportions, clean dials and emphasis on elegant simplicity have remained remarkably consistent across generations, making the Calatrava one of Patek Philippe's most enduring and recognisable collections.
Dating to the 1980s, the ref. 3893 is a particularly pure expression of that philosophy. Its slender 33mm yellow gold case frames an ivory sigma dial with faceted applied gold indexes, dauphine hands and subsidiary seconds at 6 o'clock. With its compact proportions and understated presentation, the 3893 carries clear echoes of early Calatrava references such as the legendary ref. 96.

THE DIAL
The ivory sigma dial is a study in classical Patek Philippe restraint, combining faceted applied gold indexes with elegant dauphine hands and a finely detailed subsidiary seconds register at 6 o'clock. Its warm tone complements the yellow gold case beautifully, while the sparse layout reinforces the ref. 3893's traditional dress-watch character.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Measuring 33mm in diameter and approximately 6.5mm thick, the polished 18k yellow gold case retains the elegant proportions for which vintage Calatravas are celebrated. A flat polished bezel and slender, sharply defined lugs give the watch a particularly refined profile on the wrist.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall very good condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches and more noticeable nicks to the bezel, particularly between 10 and 12 o’clock. The edges of the lugs show some softening. The case back retains well-defined hallmarks. The ivory dial is in excellent condition, while the hands show some oxidation. It is fitted with a leather strap and a gold-coloured pin buckle.
Our Perspective
The ref. 3893 captures the appeal of the Calatrava in its most traditional form: modest proportions, precious metal construction and a beautifully restrained dial. The combination of its warm ivory sigma dial and yellow gold case gives this example considerable vintage charm, while the manually wound calibre 215 keeps the watch faithful to the elegant simplicity at the heart of the Calatrava.
