Introduction

Released in 1932 and named after the cross that the Calatrava Knights paraded around Spain and Portugal during the 12th and 13th centuries, the Patek Philippe Calatrava was released as a simple timepiece with broad appeal that would help secure Patek Philippe's finances following Jean and Charles Henri Stern's investment in the brand in the same year. Designed with a strict Bauhaus-inspired aesthetic in mind, the Calatrava used, and continues to use, simplicity as its means of establishing intrigue around the craftsmanship required to construct such a stunning timepiece. Without a complicated movement or a busy design, collectors gravitate towards the Calatrava's clean aesthetic and practicality, and the ref. 584 that we have here embodies that same design language perfectly. Launched in the 1940s following references such as the ref. 570, the ref. 565 which were larger versions of the Calatrava, the ref. 584 toned the size back a bit from 35.5mm to 34mm, and thus more in keeping with the Calatrava’s original 31mm size. With its short lugs and perfectly circular case, the ref. 584 was quite visually distinctive, and today lives on as a rather rare Calatrava reference. Offered here we have a tremendously desirable “pink-on-pink” variant that combines an 18tk rose gold construction with a pink salmon dial, creating an aesthetic that is highly prized by Patek collectors. Still practical for a modern collector, the ref. 584R merges the Calatrava's original design brief in its purest form with a diameter and design that contemporary collectors can enjoy to this very day, hence its desirability.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Featuring a rich pink dial, this example's salmon display features applied hour markers and hands that all contain 18kt rose gold, just like its construction.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

The other half of its pink on pink aesthetic, this example's 34mm 18kt rose gold construction is wonderfully Bauhaus in its execution with a polished finish, short lugs, and a large circular mid-case.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

Watch is in overall very good condition. The rose gold case shows surface scratches and nicks throughout. A partially legible hallmark remains visible on the left lug side of the non-crown side. The dial displays a number of areas of degradation around the edges, along with spots and marks across the surface. The hands remain clean. It is fitted with a Collectability leather strap and a gold Patek Philippe pin buckle. Comes complete with a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives.

Our Perspective

Tremendously rare as a standalone reference, with its pink-on-pink aesthetic thanks to its 18kt rose gold case and salmon dial, this ref. 584R example is the stuff of Patek collectors' dreams.
