Introduction
Few watches have exerted a greater influence on the design of the modern dress watch than the Patek Philippe Calatrava ref. 96. Introduced in 1932, the same year that brothers Jean and Charles Henri Stern acquired a controlling interest in the Geneva manufacture, the reference established a design philosophy that would shape Patek Philippe's collections for generations. Drawing inspiration from the principles of Bauhaus design, the ref. 96 rejected the elaborate decoration of the Art Deco period in favour of clean lines, balanced proportions and understated elegance. Its round case, integrated lugs and restrained dial created an aesthetic that was both contemporary and remarkably timeless. The reference remained in production until 1973, an extraordinary 41-year lifespan that reflects the enduring appeal of its original design.
Dating to the 1950s, this ref. 96 represents a classic mid-century interpretation of Patek Philippe's foundational dress watch. Its 18K yellow gold case measures 31mm in diameter and features the elegantly proportioned lugs and slim bezel that have become synonymous with the Calatrava. The vertical brushed dial is arranged around applied hour markers and slim hands, with a subsidiary seconds register at six o'clock providing a subtle point of visual interest. Beneath the dial sits the manually wound calibre 27-AM400 (The last caliber used in the long production period of the 96), a movement that exemplifies the traditional finishing and mechanical craftsmanship for which Patek Philippe became renowned. With its compact proportions and restrained design, this example captures the essential qualities that established the ref. 96 as one of the most important dress watches of the 20th century.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 31mm case is crafted from 18K yellow gold and measures approximately 9mm thick. Its round profile, slender bezel and gently integrated lugs establish the proportions that became the foundation of the Calatrava collection. The straightforward construction allows the watch's carefully considered geometry and polished gold surfaces to remain the central elements of its design.

THE MOVEMENT
The ref. 96 is powered by Patek Philippe's manually wound calibre 12-400, a traditional movement developed during the mid-20th century. Its architecture incorporates the fine finishing associated with the Geneva manufacture, including carefully decorated bridges and polished components. The movement reflects Patek Philippe's commitment to mechanical refinement within an elegantly proportioned dress watch.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
Watch is in overall very good condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches and marks, as expected of a watch of this vintage, with some softening to the definition of the lugs. A hallmark on the back of one lug remains legible. The dial has been refreshed/refinished at some point and shows surface marks and areas of degradation around some of the hour markers. The hands remain clean. The crystal shows a number of scuffs and scratches. It is fitted with a leather strap and gold-plated pin buckle. Because the dial is refreshed/refinished we make no guarantee that the watch will archive in its current state.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
The ref. 96 established the design language that would define Patek Philippe's Calatrava collection for generations. This yellow gold example captures the understated elegance of the original design, offering collectors a direct connection to one of the most influential dress watches ever produced.
