Introduction

Launched in 1998, the Patek Philippe Chronograph ref. 5070 is an incredibly important milestone within Patek Philippe’s catalog of chronographs thanks to its status as their last chronograph to utilize a third-party movement. Powered by the manual-wind cal. CH 27-70, the ref. 5070 uses the Lemania cal. 2310 as its base, a practice that the ref. 5070 ended in 2010 following its discontinuation. An elegant watch inside and out, the ref. 5070P that we have here features a large 42mm platinum construction with a unique stepped design throughout its case with a stepped bezel flowing onto its stepped lugs, which add an architectural aesthetic to the timepiece. Boasting a stunning deep blue dial with sunken subdials in a bi-compax arrangement and applied Arabic numerals, the ref. 5070P is a true monochromatic masterpiece that is believed to have been produced no more than 1000 times by the Genevan giants. Launched in 2008 as the last new variant before the reference was discontinued in 2010, the ref. 5070P was only produced for 2 years, and so it remains as a rare neo-vintage offering that collectors have begun to see the value in as a pillar of the old Patek Philippe with its third-party Lemania movement.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Featuring a rich blue dial with applied Arabic numerals and a bi-compax layout with two sunken subdials at 3 and 9 o'clock, the ref. 5070's display is thoughtfully designed, much like its large 42mm platinum case that continues the dial's stepped design across its bezel and lugs.

THE MOVEMENT
THE MOVEMENT

An important watch in the evolution of Patek's chronograph offerings, the ref. 5070 was the last Patek to be offered using a third-party chronograph movement, with its cal. CH 27-70 using the Lemania cal. 2310 as its base, an iconic movement throughout the world of horology.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT

This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.

Condition

Watch is in overall near-mint condition. The platinum case shows light marks from careful wear. All hallmarks and stamps remain crisp. The dial and hands are near mint. It is fitted with a black Patek Philippe leather strap and a platinum Patek Philippe deployant clasp, both remaining near mint. Comes complete with inner and outer boxes, delivery card box, Certificate of Origin, booklets, and document holder.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

Championing the collection's inspiration of mid-century pilot's watches through its large 42mm diameter, the ref. 5070P is an aesthetically unique watch for Patek, given its departure from the brand's observance of more traditional design language, making it an intriguing proposition for most Patek collectors - especially when combined with its place as one of Patek's first standalone chronograph offerings in a very long time when it was launched.
