Introduction

Launched in 1968, then Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse collection marked a significant shift for Patek as they embraced the constantly changing world that was the 1960's. With the dawn quartz technology on its way, Patek sought a watch that was both unisex in its design and also immediately 'Patek' in its aesthetic. With that design brief, Patek debuted the Golden Ellipse to immediate success as a result of its novel and forward-thinking design and luxurious construction. Made from 18k yellow gold and powered by an automatic cal. 28-255SC movement, the ref. 3604 that we have here showcases the whacky and wonderful designs that brands created in the 1970s thanks to its hulking 37mm rounded rectangular construction which has earned it its “TV-Screen” nickname. Offered on a silky intricate integrated bracelet and featuring a “brun soleil” (brown sun) dial that hosts a reddish brown color along with an appropriate sunburst effect, this example is extravagant in just about the best way possible. Discontinued in 1980 after being produced for a few years, the ref. 3604 is one of several Golden Ellipse variants that have proven to become a true cult-classic in recent years as collectors begin to shine a light on the collection as whole.

THE DIAL

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Boasting a rounded rectangular 37mm x 37mm construction, the ref. 3604's 18kt yellow gold case was a behemoth in the 1970s, and today it is perfectly suited to our modern preferences for larger watches.

Condition

Watch is in excellent overall condition. Case exhibits some wear, with soft edges and small superficial scratches, visible primarily on the polished bezel and case sides. The hallmarks are located on the 9 o'clock side and are visible, but have softened due to wear. Original "Brun Soleil" dial in excellent overall condition. There are minor signs of oxidation visible from where the applied indexes are attached to the dial service. They are most evident along the 12, 1 and 2 o'clock index. Aside from the oxidation, the surface is free from any marks or damage. Watch comes on an integrated woven gold bracelet that fits a 7 1/2" wrist. There is little play in the band. Watch comes with its original box and guarantee certificate that mentions the dial configuration.

Our Perspective

The ref. 3604 is a beloved favorite for Ellipse and Golden Circle collectors. Classic, uniquely 1970s in flavor, this automatic watch fits large on the wrist and highlights the quintessential Patek Philippe autumn gold dial. Made during the 1970s, before being discontinued in 1980, this reference was offered with a number of different dial and bracelet options. This Ref. 3602/2J features its original Certificate of Origin confirming its dial color 'Brun Soleil' and shows it was originally sold by Watches of Switzerland on September 6, 1978. Furthermore it has its original Patek Philippe Golden Circle box, one of the most beautiful and elegant of Patek Philippe boxes ever made.
