Introduction
Introduced during the 1980s as the quartz counterpart to the manually wound ref. 3746, the Patek Philippe ref. 3747 embodies the refined elegance that has made the Golden Ellipse one of the manufacture's most enduring collections. Defined by its harmonious proportions, inspired by the Golden Ratio, the Ellipse has always offered a more understated alternative to Patek Philippe's round dress watches while showcasing the maison's exceptional jewellery craftsmanship.
Offered here is a particularly striking ref. 3747/17J from circa 1990. Crafted entirely in 18K yellow gold, it features the model's substantial integrated bracelet and a black lacquer dial, which provides a dramatic contrast against the warm gold case and applied baton hour markers. Powered by Patek Philippe's ultra-thin quartz calibre E23, it is a refined expression of late twentieth-century luxury.

THE DIAL
The highlight of this example is its rare black lacquer dial, whose perfectly smooth surface creates remarkable depth against the polished yellow gold baton hour markers and hands. Free from unnecessary decoration, the dial perfectly reflects the understated elegance that defines the Golden Ellipse collection.

THE CONSTRUCTION
The 18K yellow gold case flows seamlessly into the beautifully engineered integrated bracelet, creating a substantial yet elegant presence on the wrist. Inspired by the proportions of the Golden Ratio, the Ellipse's distinctive oval form remains one of Patek Philippe's most recognisable and enduring designs.

THE MOVEMENT
Powering the watch is Patek Philippe's ultra-thin quartz calibre E23. Chosen for its slim profile and reliability, it allows the ref. 3747 to maintain its elegant proportions while offering the convenience and precision expected of one of Patek Philippe's finest quartz calibres.
Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The 18K yellow gold case shows surface scratches and small nicks. The case back has light surface scratches. The dial has been refinished at some point, and the Patek Philippe printing on the dial is slightly faded. The hands show light oxidation. It is fitted with an integrated 18K yellow gold bracelet showing light surface scuffs, with a well-defined Calatrava Cross to the clasp. The bracelet and watch measure approximately 8” in length.
Our Perspective
Tthe Golden Ellipse has long been appreciated by discerning collectors. Combined with its heavy integrated gold bracelet, this black dial ref. 3747/17J captures the confident luxury of late twentieth-century Patek Philippe while remaining remarkably elegant more than three decades later.
