Introduction

Launched in 1968, then Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse collection marked a significant shift for Patek as they embraced the constantly changing world that was the 1960's. With the dawn quartz technology on its way, Patek sought a watch that was both unisex in its design and also immediately 'Patek' in its aesthetic. With that design brief, Patek debuted the Golden Ellipse to immediate success as a result of its novel and forward-thinking design and luxurious construction. Made from 18k white gold and powered by an automatic cal. 240 movement, the ref. 5028G that we have here celebrates classical watchmaking's techniques while also retaining a forward-thinking design in the form of its thin oval-shaped case, understated black dial, lug-less design, and elegant unisex proportions. Launched in 1997 and produced until 2003 and offered only in white gold, the ref. 5028G has been one of several Golden Ellipse variants that have proven to become a true cult-classic in recent years as collectors begin to shine a light on the collection as whole. Larger than previous variants thanks to its 31mm x 36mm construction, the ref. 5028 combines modern sizing with the Golden Ellipse’s legendary design to create what is an immediately recognizable horological icon.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Boasting a classical black dial, the ref. 5028G still manages to bring some modern styling details through its clean Arabic numerals and off-set running seconds subdial at 4 o'clock.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

An appropriately modern offering from the Golden Ellipse family, the ref. 5028 boasts a "Jumbo" case thanks to its 31mm width and 36mm height, dimensions that dwarf the collection's typical sizing. As such, it speaks to modern tastes, while still offering a classical aesthetic.

Condition

Watch is in near-mint condition. Case has minor surface wear only, and crisp hallmarks visible on the 6 o'clock side. Watch comes with original deployant buckle. Please note that the archive is on order and will be delivered to the winning bidder upon receipt.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

One modern Ellipse stands out as a bit of an enigma and a wrist-pleaser of the highest order: the ref. 5028G. Produced from 1997-2003, it was made in less than 500 examples and only made in white gold. Like its Calatrava cousin, the ref. 5000G, the watch features an automatic caliber 240 and eccentric sub-seconds at 4 o’clock. Alongside, the ref. 5738 and the ref. 3605, the ref. 5028G is one one the largest Ellipse references ever to be made.
