Introduction

Throughout its history, Patek Philippe has demonstrated an exceptional ability to revisit its archives while creating watches that remain relevant to contemporary collectors. The Gondolo collection is perhaps the clearest expression of this philosophy, drawing inspiration from the shaped wristwatches produced by the manufacture during the early decades of the twentieth century. Named in recognition of the Brazilian retailer Gondolo & Labouriau, one of Patek Philippe's most important historical clients, the collection celebrates an era when watchmakers experimented with rectangular, tonneau and cushion-shaped cases, elaborate dial decoration and architectural design. Introduced in 2007, the ref. 5098P was conceived as a modern interpretation of an Art Deco-inspired Patek Philippe wristwatch from the 1920s, combining the distinctive aesthetics of the period with the precision and finishing standards of contemporary Genevan watchmaking.

The ref. 5098P is distinguished by its beautifully proportioned platinum case, measuring approximately 32mm across and 42mm in length, with a gently curved tonneau profile designed to follow the contours of the wrist. Its most striking feature is undoubtedly the silvered dial, which incorporates an intricate hand-guilloché pattern reminiscent of the decorative techniques employed by Patek Philippe's dial makers during the early twentieth century. Applied Breguet-style Arabic numerals, an oval railway minute track and elegant blackened hands reinforce the historical inspiration, while the prominent polished bezel and visible lug screws contribute to the watch's architectural character. Beneath the dial sits the manually wound calibre 25-21 REC AIG 2, a shaped movement developed to complement the unusual case architecture. Combining traditional decorative craftsmanship with sophisticated mechanical construction, the Gondolo ref. 5098P represents one of Patek Philippe's most distinctive modern interpretations of its historical designs.

Condition

Watch is in overall excellent condition. The platinum case shows surface scratches and signs of wear, with some small nicks to the bezel and case edges. The display case back shows scuffs and small nicks, while the stamps and hallmarks remain very well defined. The screw heads show some light wear. The dial and hands are in near-mint condition. It is fitted with a leather strap and platinum Patek Philippe pin buckle showing some surface marks.

Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.

Our Perspective

The Gondolo ref. 5098P is a compelling demonstration of Patek Philippe's ability to reinterpret its historical designs. Its sculptural platinum case and exceptional hand-guilloché dial celebrate traditional craftsmanship, while the specially developed movement makes it an equally interesting proposition from a technical perspective.
