Introduction
Easily situated amongst the most iconic dress watches ever, the Patek Philippe Calatrava embodies the very essence of what a classically styled timepiece should look like. Defining the entire market niche in 1932 when it debuted, the Calatrava has become the foundation of Patek Philippe’s elegant offerings, with the collection growing to include a multitude of references of various designs across a variety of dials, materials, complications and more. Offered here we have the Calatrava ref. 5227G, which builds upon the Calatrava collection's history as one of Patek Philippe's best-known and best-looking dress watches. Boasting Patek's esteemed design language and launched in 2013, the ref. 5227G features an 18kt white gold case with polished surfaces, a domed bezel and a gorgeous off-white lacquered dial that houses white gold dauphine hour hands and applied indices. An exercise in minimalism, as per the Calatrava’s Bauhaus-inspired design language, the Calatrava’s clean aesthetic has been the bedrock of its offering for decades, on which the ref. 5227G builds upon with one subtle difference, the inclusion of an Officer’s caseback that hinges open to reveal a sapphire crystal caseback that proudly displays the automatic cal. 324 SC movement that powers the ref. 5227G.

THE DIAL
Boasting a beige lacquered dial, the ref. 5227G's display is perfectly suited to the understated nature of its design and construction, with 18kt white gold dauphine hands and applied indices.

THE CONSTRUCTION
Measuring 39mm in diameter and made of 18kt white gold, the ref. 5227G features a hefty case indeed. However, with its elegant domed bezel, polished surfaces, and thin 9.24mm profile, it wears with a supreme sense of decorum, as one might expect from Patek.

TIMING MACHINE READOUT
This reading was taken (crown down) with a ONEOF Accuracy Boutique Edition timing machine at time of cataloging. It is provided as a courtesy only, and shall not be construed as a warranty or guarantee of any kind. Please refer to our terms and conditions of sale for more information.
Condition
The watch is in overall excellent condition. The white gold half-hunter style case shows some light scratches on the polished sections, while the brushed finish on the hinged case back cover remains well defined, with a couple of marks visible at the edge. The hallmarks on the backs of the lugs are all crisp. The cream dial and hands are near-mint. It is fitted with a dark brown Patek Philippe alligator strap and a white gold Patek Philippe buckle in excellent condition. The watch is accompanied by its inner and outer boxes, original certificate, booklets, and polishing cloth. The name on the certificate has been obscured with marker and white-out.
Please Note: Due to CITES considerations, if the watch is to be shipped outside of the USA, the exotic skin strap will have to be removed.
Our Perspective
Simply one of the best modern Calatravas. The 5227G has that brilliantly executed officer’s style hinged caseback and a creamy dial that’s just gorgeous. This one needs to be seen in person - it wears like perfection on the wrist.
