Introduction
Introduced in 1997, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut represented a strikingly modern direction for a manufacture still largely associated with traditional dress watches and complicated haute horlogerie. Conceived as a younger and more casual counterpart to the Nautilus, it combined a rounded octagonal case with an embossed dial and, most radically for Patek Philippe at the time, a composite "Tropical" strap. What initially appeared unconventional has since become one of the manufacture's most recognisable contemporary designs.
Introduced in 2007, the ref. 5167A refined the original Aquanaut concept with a larger and notably slim 40.8mm stainless steel case. Its black embossed dial is echoed by the distinctive pattern of the matching composite strap, creating a remarkably cohesive design, while the sapphire display case back reveals the beautifully finished automatic movement within.

THE DIAL
The black dial features the distinctive embossed pattern that has become a signature of the Aquanaut collection, complemented by applied Arabic numerals and luminous hands. Its geometric texture continues onto the matching black composite strap, visually integrating the dial, case and strap into a single design.
THE MOVEMENT
Visible through the sapphire display case back, the automatic calibre 324 S C features Patek Philippe's characteristic high level of finishing and a 21K gold central rotor. Providing central hours, minutes and seconds together with a date display, it combines everyday practicality with the traditional movement finishing expected of the manufacture.

Condition
Watch is in overall near-mint condition. The steel case shows light surface scratches and signs of careful wear. The dial and hands are like new. It is fitted with a Patek Philippe composite strap and a steel deployant clasp in near-mint condition. The strap fits approximately a 7¼” wrist. Comes with the inner and outer boxes, Certificate of Origin, booklets, document holder and hangtag.
Our Perspective
Once the unconventional younger sibling of the Nautilus, the Aquanaut has become an important part of Patek Philippe's modern identity. The ref. 5167A arguably represents the concept at its purest: stainless steel, a black embossed dial, matching composite strap and a beautifully finished automatic movement, all contained within an exceptionally wearable 40.8mm case.
