Introduction

Launched in 1982 and remaining in production until around 1987, the Les Grecques, or “The Greek” is perhaps one of the most unique watches from within Patek’s storied historical offerings. Speaking to the whacky and wonderful design themes that had become common place by the late 1970s and early 1980s, Patek decided to derive inspiration from classical Greek architecture and other Greek design motifs. Boasting Corinthian columns as the branchards of its 24mm x 30mm 18kt yellow gold case, Greek key patterns in its dial and an ornate bracelet that speaks to Greek proportions and balance, the Les Grecques is one of the most esoteric, and yet refined, collections that Patek has ever made. Powered by a quartz movement and featuring a salom-colored dial, the ref. 3975 is watchmaking design and artistry at its very best – something Patek have been masters at for decades, if not longer.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Boasting a simple salmon dial with Greek key patterns around its periphery in place of a traditional chapter ring, the Les Grecques is a wonderfully executed tribute to Greek design.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Embodying Greek design in its physical construction and not just in its display, the Les Grecques features corinthian columns engraved into its branchards, a rather unique detail indeed.

THE PROFILE
THE PROFILE

With its flat profile arising from its thin quartz movement, the Les Grecques's construction allows its unique design details, such as its case and intricate bracelet, to come to the fore in a tangible and interesting manner.

Condition

Watch is in excellent overall condition. Superficial wear is evident on the case, with minor signs of wear and use. Minor scuffs visible on the lip of the caseback. Hallmarks on caseback and clasp are crisp and fully visible. Dial is excellent with little to no signs of aging. Bracelet has 23 links and fits an approx 7 1/2" wrist with minimal stretch. There is an additional link included.

Our Perspective

The ‘Les Grecques’ family of watches was launched in 1982 and remained in the line until 1987. Let’s just say, there is no Patek Philippe more 1980s than the Les Grecques! The watches were designed with classical Greek motifs including bezels with corinthian columns, Greek key patterns on the dial, and bracelets designed with Greek-inspired proportions of balance and symmetry. In a 1987 marketing brochure, Patek Philippe wrote: “The Greek civilization, mother of all the arts, has endowed us with a highly developed sense of proportion … This sense is illustrated in the ‘Les Grecques’ collection.” This example of a ref. 3975/1J is preserved in near mint condition with a 7.5 inch diameter bracelet. In 1984, this watch had a retail price of 14,900 CHF.
