Introduction
The Nautilus arrived in 1976 as Patek Philippe’s radical interpretation of the emerging luxury sports watch, with Gérald Genta’s porthole-inspired case, integrated bracelet and horizontally embossed dial creating a design unlike anything traditionally associated with the manufacture. Five years later, Patek Philippe expanded the collection with the ref. 3800, reducing the proportions of the original ref. 3700 while adding a central seconds hand. At 37.5mm, it offered a more compact expression of Genta’s design and would remain an important part of the Nautilus family for more than two decades.
The ref. 3800 was produced in numerous configurations, and the 3800/1JA offered here combines stainless steel with 18K yellow gold for a distinctly period two-tone execution. Its champagne dial continues that warmth across the watch, with applied yellow gold hour markers and hands set against the familiar horizontal embossing. Particularly noteworthy is the sigma designation flanking “SWISS” at six o’clock, indicating the use of precious metal for the dial furniture, while a white date disc with black numerals provides a crisp contrast at three.

THE DIAL
The champagne sigma dial features the Nautilus collection’s characteristic horizontal embossing, complemented by applied 18K yellow gold hour markers and matching hands. A white date wheel with contrasting black numerals sits at three o’clock, while the sigma symbols flanking “SWISS” at six indicate the use of precious metal for the dial furniture.

THE CONSTRUCTION
At 37.5mm, the ref. 3800 scales down the architecture of the original ref. 3700 while retaining its rounded octagonal bezel, lateral case elements and integrated bracelet. On the 3800/1JA, stainless steel is contrasted by an 18K yellow gold bezel and gold elements within the bracelet, giving the familiar Genta design a distinctly different character.

Condition
Watch is in overall excellent condition. The steel and 18K yellow gold case shows light scratches and small nicks, with some surface scratches to the polished elements of the gold bezel. The case back shows some surface marks and small nicks. The dial is in near-mint condition. The steel and yellow gold bracelet shows some surface scuffs to the gold sections and scratches to the clasp, with light play between the links. The bracelet is fitted with 20 links, 6 of which are removable, and fits approximately a 7” wrist. There are 3 spare links included. Comes with inner and outer boxes, Certificate of Origin, booklets, document holder, card and hangtag.
Our Perspective
The ref. 3800 has become increasingly appreciated as more than simply a smaller alternative to the original Nautilus. Its 37.5mm proportions are remarkably elegant, while the addition of central seconds gives it its own identity within the family. In two-tone 3800/1JA form, particularly with this champagne sigma dial, it captures a very specific period of Patek Philippe design while remaining unmistakably a Nautilus.
