Introduction

A legendary watch that requires no introduction, the Patek Philippe Nautilus has managed to become one of the most iconic timepieces of all time thanks to its stunning design, extreme demand, impeccable craftsmanship, and rich heritage. With its distinctive asymmetrical dial, and interesting array of useful complications, the ref. 3712A was appreciated the moment it was released in 2005. Produced for only one year before being replaced by the more common ref. 5712A that debuted in 2006, the ref. 3712A is arguably one of the rarest Nautilus variants ever commercially produced. Today favored as the most unique of all Nautilus variants, the ref. 3712’s asymmetrical blue-black dial is what lends to its extreme popularity, with its design a direct contrast to the Nautilus’ otherwise symmetrical porthole-inspired design. A break from Patek’s conservatism, the ref. 3712 is a fantastic piece that collectors have rightfully flocked to, or at least tried to flock to given the ref. 3712’s rarity and obscurity.

THE DIAL
THE DIAL

Featuring the Nautilus' typical dial DNA, the ref. 3712 sports a blue to black gradient alongside horizontal embossing that combine to create a familiar aesthetic. However, with its off-center pointer date and moonphase indicator, power reserve indicator, and running seconds subdial, it is a wonderfully unique dial indeed. Identifiable as a later example thanks to it having 4 dots instead of 3 in its power reserve, this ref. 3712 is likely from 2006.

THE CONSTRUCTION
THE CONSTRUCTION

Perfectly familiar to any watch collector, the ref. 3712 sports the same legendary porthole-inspired case and iconic integrated bracelet as practically every Nautilus variant that has come before it.

Condition

Watch is in excellent overall condition. Case shows minor surface wear, with scratches visible primarily around the bezel and bracelet center links. Dial near-mint with little to no signs of aging. The bracelet has 21 links currently fitted, 5 of which are removable. It fits a 7" wrist with little stretch. There is an additional link included. Watch comes with original inner and outer box, guarantee certificate and booklets.

Our Perspective

A uniquely styled version of one of watchmaking's biggest names, the ref. 3712 brings an air of individuality to the Nautilus' aesthetic that other variants fail to emulate, and so its individuality is deserving of serious praise, which it rightfully earns - at least from those who know it even exists.
